South University confers 709 degrees

South University will confer 709 degrees at 11 a.m. this Saturday, June 19 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. The university’s student body has grown in recent years, necessitating the change in venue from the Johnny Mercer Theatre. With 80 doctorate, 296 master’s, 221 bachelor’s, and 112 associates degrees, university officials expect 3,500 guests to join the Class of 2010 as they walk across the stage. The university’s Chancellor, John T. South, III, is scheduled to deliver the commencement address.
“Graduation is always a good time to reflect on where we have been and where we are going,” said Todd Cellini, president of South University. “As always, I am proud of these graduates, who I know worked hard and followed through on their commitment to earn college degrees and will now have access to the opportunities that education provides.”
The 376 graduate-level students will receive their academic hoods on Friday, June 18 at the Savannah Civic Center’s Johnny Mercer Theater in three hooding ceremonies:
- 12 noon – College of Art & Sciences, College of Business, College of Nursing
- 2 pm – School of Pharmacy
- 4 pm – College of Health Professions
The Class of 2010 represents 24 different programs of study offered by South University. Many of the graduates pursued their studies in the university’s online programs and are traveling to Savannah for the commencement ceremony.
About John T. South, III
John South has served as Chancellor of South University since 1975. Under Mr. South’s leadership, South College was transformed from small business school to South University, which offers over 30 programs of study and specializes in business, legal studies, and healthcare professions. His vision included the creation of several competitive programs to meet the growing demand for specialized higher education in the healthcare industry. South University’s School of Pharmacy continues to be one of only three pharmacy programs in the state.
John South is a Senior Vice President for Education Management Corporation (EDMC). He sits on the Board of Trustees for Argosy University and Western State University College of Law. A long time resident of Savannah, he is active in his home community of Savannah, Georgia, where he is a member of the Downtown Rotary, the World President’s Organization, the Savannah Chamber - CEO Council, and he serves as a board member to numerous organizations including SunTrust Bank of Savannah and Independent Presbyterian Church. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Tennessee.
